Eat Your Own Dog Food: Feedback Friends and Writing in Community
My good friend, Scott Ryser, the Founder and CEO of Yakabod always talks about how companies should “eat their own dog food.” In other words, “practice what you preach.”
I’m following Scott’s advice. Yesterday I blogged about Thinking Robustly in Community. My point was that we think best when we responsively listen to one another.
To apply Scott’s admonition, I have asked a group of two dozen pastors, authors, biblical counselors, and professors to become my Feedback Friends. As I begin to pen my latest book, Equipping Counselors for the Local Church: The 4E Ministry Training Strategy, my Feedback Friends are journeying with me chapter-by-chapter.
I’m writing in community because I believe that we think best in community. I’ve asked my Feedback Friends to be brutally honest and helpfully candid. I want their big picture “feel” of the book and I want their specific suggestions for improving each first draft chapter.
It makes the writing process harder but better. It also makes it more fun. And most importantly, it will make the final product more effective for God’s people.
