Blessings: An Ice Cream Sundae with a Cherry on Top
This past Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday I facilitated the annual leadership retreat of the Biblical Counseling Coalition. It was a great and powerful time. At the same time, as the facilitator, I was always “on duty” and it was a tad exhausting.
So, my flight home was scheduled for 8:15 PM, getting me to my house by 11:00 PM. But we made it to the Atlanta airport by 3:15. So, an earlier flight was a possibility. But it was going to cost $200. It wasn’t worth it.
Well, I used that extra time to hang out with several of the Biblical Counseling Coalition Council Board members—a great use of time!
They boarded their plane around 4:45 PM. I turned my phone on to find a text from Southwest Airlines saying my flight was delayed one hour (that would have put me home after midnight).
As I read the text, I looked up and I was standing in front of the Southwest counter at the gate where a 5:05 flight to Chicago was boarding. I know my Southwest policy: if your later flight is delayed and an earlier flight has room, you can change to the early flight for free!
And I did.
I was aboard the 5:05 flight in minutes with my luggage and home five hours earlier than anticipated.
On top of that, when I landed in Chicago, I had another text from Southwest saying the original flight was back on schedule. So, no one was inconvenienced by my getting home five hours early.
In the grand scheme of life, saving five hours is small potatoes, for sure.
Yet, if I thank God for the grand blessings and if I thank God even for the difficulties in my life, I surely should thank him for the small potato blessings. Or, for the ice cream sundae with a cherry on top.
That’s how I felt—the retreat was a wonderful ice cream sundae. And I didn’t even deserve that. Getting home five hours early was a cherry on top—and I certainly didn’t deserve that. In fact, I don’t deserve a thing. Every blessing God pours out is a grace blessing.
“Thank You, Father, for all Your blessings, including the cherry on top blessings!”
