Celebrating the Heroes of Black Church History

Black History Month is a wonderful reminder for us to do in February what the Bible says we should do year-round: learn from the legacy of Christians who have gone before us. In Hebrews 12:1-3, we read:
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders us and the sin that so easily entangles us, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.”
If anyone can teach us today how to look to Jesus in the midst of suffering, it is our African American brothers and sisters from Black Church History. Faced with horrific suffering, our brothers and sisters in Christ learned how to face their suffering face-to-face with Christ. And, they learned how to move beyond their suffering by looking to Jesus.

During our Sunday Worship Service, Dr. Bob Kellemen, author of Beyond the Suffering: Celebrating the Legacy of African American Soul Care and Spiritual Direction, will be our special guest speaker, presenting the dynamic and inspiring message: Celebrating the Heroes of Black Church History.
