Growing up as a kid, my family owned two Mary Carter Paint stores. In the mid-60s, they had a radio ad with the jingle:

“Buy One, Get One Free, At Your Mary Carter Paint Store!” 

Well, it turns out that was not quite true and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) took that ad and the Mary Carter Paint company all the way to the Supreme Court. If you are a history buff, or a legal buff, you can read it about it here: FTC v. Mary Carter Paint Co., 382 U.S. 46 (1965).

So…why in the world am I telling you all this? Partly because it’s an amusing piece of my family history.
