I knew I wanted to write ever since I was in college. I love writing.

When I first entered into ministry, I dreamed of authoring three books. I hoped to pen books on:

Through God’s kindness, and by God’s grace, I have been able to author, co-author, or contribute chapters to not just three books, but nearly two dozen books.

My Favorite Authored Book

Deciding which book of mine is my favorite is almost like thinking about which child is one’s favorite. Every child is uniquely precious.

Each book is special in its own way.

However, if I were forced to select one of my twenty-three books as “my favorite” it would be Beyond the Suffering: Embracing the Legacy of African American Soul Care and Spiritual Direction.

Why Beyond the Suffering?

  • I was deeply impacted personally by the research for Beyond the Suffering.
  • My understanding of and practice of biblical counseling was deeply enriched by the material in Beyond the Suffering.
  • I have loved presenting and teaching on Beyond the Suffering—to African American audiences—because they have felt so honored to have their history honored.
  • I have loved presenting and teaching on Beyond the Suffering—to predominantly Caucasian audiences—because they have had their eyes opened to the wealth of wisdom from the Black Church.
  • I have loved presenting and teaching on Beyond the Suffering—to cross-cultural audiences—because we have had a great time interacting together and learning from each other.

What Is Beyond the Suffering All About?

So, what is the focus of Beyond the Suffering?

  • Beyond the Suffering shares the amazing history of how enslaved African American Christians entrusted themselves to Christ during the horrors of slavery, and how they ministered one-another care to each other.
  • Beyond the Suffering is a history of biblical counseling in America.

We typically think of “the modern biblical counseling movement” as starting with Jay Adams in the 1960s. In one sense, this is certainly true. However, the “biblical counseling movement in America” really started with African Americans from 1619 to 1865 and beyond. Beyond the Suffering tells that history.

  • Beyond the Suffering distills scores and scores of biblical counseling principles and one-another ministry practices from the history of African American Christians.
  • Beyond the Suffering offers all Christians a powerful model of facing suffering face-to-face with Christ, lamenting our losses, and clinging to Christ to find healing hope in the midst of our suffering.
