Kyle Johnston Reviews Raising Kids in the Way of Grace by Bob Kellemen

Help! I’m a Parent!
Parenting. That single word refers to one of the most glorious and difficult of all responsibilities. Furthermore, we live at a time when we are being increasingly bombarded with new parenting approaches and techniques. I recently attended a parenting seminar on “Emotionally Intelligent Parenting”—and left feeling emotionally frustrated! Often, resources on parenting can end up exasperating parents rather than equipping them.
So, what are parents to do? Where can we find reliable and wise help? How can we embrace this glorious yet challenging task in such a way that we raise kids who know the love and holiness of their heavenly Father?
Thankfully, biblical counselor Bob Kellemen has written a book short enough for parents to read and profound enough for parents to be equipped. His new book, Raising Kids in the Way of Grace is an exposition of five practical marks of grace-focused parenting.
Not a How-To Parenting Manual…Something Much Better
This is a book that is surprisingly profound, given its brevity. Bob wisely avoids giving the reader a how-to parenting manual and rather provides the reader with a biblical perspective of the parenting task. It really is packed with great truths and insightful counsel.
This book isn’t a how-to manual. It’s something much better. Though a small book at 79 pages, it’s disproportionately large in delivering honest and profound biblical counsel to parents who are seeking to raise their children in the way of grace.
Two Key Truths
I’ll mention two key truths that I’ve found enormously helpful to reflect on.
Depending on God
A wise parent is fundamentally a parent that is not self-sufficient but God-dependent. Bob reminds the reader that no parent has the resources they need within themselves—and that, amazingly, the resources we need can be found in our Triune God. We need to depend on Him!
Reflecting God:
The line that challenged and helped me the most in the whole book was this one:
“As God is to us, so we seek to be to our children” (p. 32).
This critical insight has pushed me to pursue a deeper relationship with my heavenly Father as I seek to be a godly earthly father. It is only as we experience the holy love of our heavenly Father that we will be able to reflect that holy love to our children as imperfect earthly parents.
For Parents, Counselors, and Pastors
Of course, this is an excellent resource for parents. I also highly recommend it to pastors and biblical counselors who may be called upon to help parents. I warmly recommend it.
