“Signs” and God’s Affectionate Sovereignty
If by “signs” someone means that God “miraculously” sends us “signs” to direct and guide us, then don’t count me in as among the believers in “signs.”
If, on the other hand, by “signs,” we mean that a sovereign God guides us by His inerrant Word and also providentially directs circumstances for our good and His glory, then I buy that.
Here’s a brief current example…
We have the joy of having my Mother-in-Law with us for an extended stay. She is very healthy for 86, but at 86 she cannot do all that she used to do.
She shared with me that she wished she had more strength to fulfill more of God’s purpose in her life. She shared more personally with me—info I’m not 
going to share in a public blog. Suffice it to say that my Mother-in-Law, like all those who are in their “senior years,” struggles with sensing the purpose and meaning in God’s plans.
Here’s where the “sign” came in…
So, after talking with her, I went back to my preparation for a paper for the Evangelical Theological Society. I was in crawling around in my closet where I stack overflow books, looking for a book related to my ETS paper.
A huge stack of books fell on me, over me, around me…you get the picture.
As I reached to pick up the first mess of books, what do I find but a book that I didn’t even know I had.
A devotional book in huge print specifically designed for older Christians struggling with God’s purpose for them in their twilight years.
Now…tell me that’s “just a coincidence.”
I’m not buying that.
I’m convinced it is God in His affectionate sovereignty displaying to my Mother-in-Law His providential love for her.
When I shared this “falling book” story with my Mother-in-Law the smile on her face was huge. She immediately starting devouring this devotional book as a gift especially to her from her loving and sovereign heavenly father.
