5 Top Christian Blog Posts of the Week: 5 to Live By
5 top Christian blog posts of the week—on Nelson Mandela, Hobby Lobby, the Supreme Court, Jameis Winston, & homosexuality in culture.
In the News: Nelson Mandela
This week the world learned of the death at age 95 of Nelson Mandela. Almost everyone knows his name and something of his life. But few know the complexity of his legacy. Albert Mohler introduces us that complexity in Nelson Mandela and the Ironies of History.
In the News: Hobby Lobby and Religious Freedom
The US Supreme Court will be hearing the Hobby Lobby case where this business owned by committed Christians and run on Christian principles, believes their religious freedom is being curtailed by portions of the Affordable Health Care Act. Justin Taylor provides an excellent introduction to the issues from a religious liberty perspective in Why Hobby Lobby Matters.
In the News: Hobby Lobby and Accurate Reporting
Denny Burk explains the lies being spread about the Hobby Lobby religious freedom case.
“This case is not about a woman’s ‘right’ to purchase contraceptives and abortifacient drugs. This case is about who will be forced to pay for them. President Obama believes that the federal government has a right to force Christian employers to pay for contraceptives and abortifacient devices. Hobby Lobby is simply saying that they cannot in good conscience pay for those things.”

In the News: Jameis Winston, Florida State, and the Heisman Trophy
At Shepherd Press, Jay Younts puts a biblical perspective on the Jameis Winston story.
“You may have read that the quarterback for the number one ranked college football team and a leading candidate for the famed Heisman Trophy was a person of interest in a possible sexual assault case. The Florida State Attorney’s office had to determine if there was a reason to bring charges of sexual assault against the quarterback. The female in the case claimed assault. The young man said that there was sexual activity but that it was consensual. On Thursday, December, 5, the States Attorney determined that there was not enough evidence to bring charges against the quarterback, so the case was dropped. So the hunt for the National Championship is still on and the Heisman Trophy is within reach. Both of these goals would have likely vanished if the young man had been charged.
Why is this news story important for you and your family? Because it demonstrates that God and his word are held in low regard by our culture and by our colleges and universities. We may never know for sure whether the assault occurred or not. What we do know is at the quarterback freely allows that casual, consensual sex did take place. Yet, because he was not charged with assault all is well.”
