Our Capax Dei

We are told that “hunger is the best sauce.”

The Bible tells us that spiritually speaking, “hunger is the best sauce in our thirst for God.”

God’s Word teaches that God created the human personality with a capax Dei: capacity for God. We are at the core, spiritual beings.

This capacity soars above, beyond, and deeper than all other desires, surpassing them in a marvelous and terrifying way. In the face of this bursting forth of longing for God, everything else suddenly retreats.

What is most vital about us is our vitality for God. God designed us with an insatiable longing for Him.

Both the Old Testament and the New Testament repeatedly emphasize the God-shaped and God-sized vacuum in our soul. King David pens:

“As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?” (Psalm 42:1-2).

The Apostle Paul concurs.

“For this reason I kneel before the Father, from whom his whole family in heaven and on earth derives its name. I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God” (Ephesians 3:14-19).
