A Word from Bob
If you had just the size of a Twitter tweet to capture something of the essence of what makes biblical counseling truly biblical, what would you tweet?
I’ve been asking myself that question of late. And…I’ve been answering that question daily. Here’s a compilation of my fifth week of tweets—taken directly from Scripture, and starting with the phrase: As biblical counselors… And always ending with the hashtag #BibleCn for “Biblical Counseling.” (I’ve developed this week’s summaries from God’s Word and from the Biblical Counseling Coalition’s Confessional Statement—I had the honor of overseeing the development of the Confessional Statement in 2010.) Here are links to earlier posts in this series:
Summary Tweet 1: Ephesians 3:14-19; 1 Corinthians 12:12-27; Romans 15:14
As biblical counselors, we believe that biblical counseling is rooted in the life of the church. Wise counseling embeds personal change within God’s community—the church—with all God’s rich resources of corporate and interpersonal means of grace (Eph. 3:14-19; 1 Cor. 12:12-27; Rom. 15:14). #BibleCn
Summary Tweet 2: Genesis 1:26-28; Genesis 2:15; Matthew 28:18-20; 1 Peter 3:15
As biblical counselors, we affirm the role of para-church counseling organizations as they serve alongside the church, help equip the church, encourage Christians to counsel biblically, and purpose to impact the world for Christ (Gen. 1:26-28; 2:15; Matt. 28:18-20; 1 Pet. 3:15). #BibleCn
Summary Tweet 3: Hebrews 3:12-19; Hebrews 10:19-25; Ephesians 3:14-19; Acts 2:41-47
As biblical counselors, we believe that by example and exhortation the New Testament commends the personal, face-to-face, one-another ministry of the Word—whether in one-to-one or small group relationships (Heb. 3:12-19; 10:19-25; Eph. 3:14-19; Acts 2:41-47). #BibleCn
Summary Tweet 4: Ephesians 4:11-16
As biblical counselors, we are convinced that God calls the church to mutual wise counseling—the personal ministry of the Word—just as He calls the church to the public ministries of the Word—preaching, teaching, worship, and the ordinances (Eph. 4:11-16). #BibleCn
Summary Tweet 5: Ephesians 4:11-16
As biblical counselors, we believe that Christ calls and empowers pastors to effectively shepherd souls while they equip and oversee diverse forms of every-member ministry (Eph. 4:11-16). #BibleCn
Summary Tweet 6: Hebrews 4:14-16; John 3:16; John 13:34-35; 1 Thessalonians 2:7-8
As biblical counselors, we believe that biblical counseling must be founded in love. Christ’s incarnation is not just the basis for care, but also the model for how we care (Heb. 4:14-16; John 3:16; 13:34-35; 1 Thess. 2:7-8). #BibleCN
Summary Tweet 7: 1 Thessalonians 2:7-8; 2 Corinthians 1:3-4
As biblical counselors, we seek to enter into a person’s story, listening well, expressing thoughtful love, and engaging the person with empathy and compassion—sharing Scripture and our own souls (1 Thess. 2:7-8; 2 Cor. 1:3-4). #BibleCn
