A Word from Bob
If you had just the size of a Twitter tweet to capture something of the essence of what makes biblical counseling truly biblical, what would you tweet?
I’ve been asking myself that question of late. And…I’ve been answering that question daily. Here’s a compilation of my sixth week of tweets—derived from Scripture, and starting with the phrase: As biblical counselors… Each ends with the Twitter hashtag #BibleCn for “Biblical Counseling.”
I’ve developed this week’s summaries from God’s Word and from the Biblical Counseling Coalition’s Confessional Statement. I had the honor of overseeing the development of the Confessional Statement in 2010.

Summary Tweet 1: 1 Thessalonians 5:14-15; 1 John 4:7-21
As biblical counselors, we’re convinced that the wise and loving personal ministry of the Word takes many appropriate forms, from caring comfort to loving rebuke, from careful listening to relevant scriptural exploration, all while building trusting, authentic relationships (1 Th. 5:14-15; 1 Jn. 4:7-21). #BibleCn
Summary Tweet 2: Ephesians 4:17-32
As biblical counselors, we believe that wise counseling takes into account all that people experience (desires, thoughts, goals, actions, words, emotions, struggles, situational pressure, physical issues, suffering, abuse, injustice, etc.) (Eph. 4:17-32). #BibleCn
Summary Tweet 3: Ephesians 4:29
As biblical counselors, we believe all human experience is the context for understanding how God’s Word relates to life. Such awareness shapes the content of counseling and how we interact so all we say is edifying, according to the need of the moment, giving grace to the hearer (Eph. 4:29) #BibleCn
Summary Tweet 4: Matthew 22:35-40; Hebrews 4:12-13
As biblical counselors, we believe that our counsel must be attentive to heart issues—all behavior is tied to thoughts, intentions, and affections of the heart. All our actions arise from hearts that are worshipping either God or something else (Matt. 22:35-40; Heb. 4:12-13). #BibleCn
Summary Tweet 5: Hebrews 4:12-13
As biblical counselors, we emphasize the importance of the heart & address the inner person. God fully understands & rightly weighs who we are, what we do, & why we do it. While we can’t completely understand a person’s heart, God’s Word reveals & penetrates the heart’s core beliefs & intentions (Heb. 4:12-13). #BibleCn
Summary Tweet 6: Matthew 23:23-28
As biblical counselors, we believe that wise counseling seeks to address both the inward and outward aspects of human life to bring thorough and lasting change into the image of Christ (Matt. 23:23-28). #BibleCn
Summary Tweet 7: Matthew 22;35-40
As biblical counselors, we believe the Bible is clear that human behavior is not mechanical, but grows out of a heart that desires, longs, thinks, chooses, and feels in ways that are oriented either toward or against Christ (Matt. 22:35-40). #BibleCn
